Mississippi, MS

Mississippi (MS) is the 32nd largest state in the United States and its capital is the city of Jackson. Its name originates from the Native American term for Great Waters or the Father of Waters. It’s famous of its agricultural potential, because of the rich fertile lands and its increased network of rivers.

The Mississippi River, also known as the Old man River, is the largest in the United States and it’s the main waterway for the entire nation. Jackson is one of 4 worldwide cities which hosts the International Ballet Competition. Also, the first heart and lung transplants in the world were performed in Mississippi. The state includes many towns which have been granted honorary titles such as the Greenwood which is known as the Cotton Capital, Belzoni which is named the Catfish Capital, and Vardaman which is considered the Sweet Potato Capital.

Minnesota, MN

Minnesota is a northern state which is bordered by Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, with Canada (Ontario and Manitoba) stretching across its northern boundary. First colonised by French explorers after centuries of indigenous Sioux and Sioux-related inhabitance, Minnesota experienced waves of European migration throughout the 19th century, creating an interesting admixture of Scandinavian and German influences. The state is home to many lakes and forest land, with wolves, black bears, moose, elk, bison and caribou found throughout its protected parks. The capital of Minnesota is Saint Paul and the largest city is Minneapolis, a city renowned for both its LGBT scene and as the birthplace of the “Minneapolis Sound”, a genre of music penned by the musician Prince.

Maryland, MD

Founded as a colony of Great Britain in 1632, this mid-Atlantic state was named after the queen of England at the time. Maryland is sometimes known as the Old Line State, commemorating an important battle in the Revolutionary War. Other people call it America in Miniature, because it contains so many different geographical features – from beaches to forests to mountains. Maryland is famous for its seafood, especially crab, and it’s also known for having the first railroad station ever built in the United States, Mount Clare Station in Baltimore. Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland, but Annapolis, founded in 1649, is its capital.

Maine

Maine is a New England state, located in northeastern United States and bordered by Canada, New Hampshire and the Atlantic Ocean. With a famed coastline consisting of rocky and jagged vistas, the regions is renowned for its seafood, particularly clams and lobster. Maine’s history is one of early Native American settlement, predominantly by Wabanski people. The first Europeans to make contact in the region were actually Norse Vikings led by Leif Erikson, who attempted to settle Canada’s Newfoundland. The first Europeans to settle proper arrived in 1604 after which chunks of the area became French colonies. The capital of Maine is Augusta whilst the largest city is Portland, a coastal city and metropolitan area that is the namesake of the West Coast city of Portland, Oregon.

Michigan

Michigan is a northeastern state, located in the Great Lakes region of the United States as it is bounded by four of the eponymous Great Lakes. Because of the state’s proximity to fresh lakes, a citizen is never less than six miles from a natural water source at any point in the state. Michigan’s capital is Lansing, the only state capital that is not a county seat. The largest city in Michigan is Detroit, a metropolitan area which is the centre of the U.S’ major automotive industry, although this industry took a significant hit at the end of the 20th century. Michigan played a fundamental role in U.S. political history as the first meeting point of the Republican Party in 1854.

Montana

Montana is a state located in northwestern United States which, despite being the fourth largest state, is the third least densely populated. Consisting of a varied topography of mountain ranges (as part of the famed Rocky Mountains), prairie lands and dry badlands. Bordered by Idaho, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, as well as Canada to the north, the region is famous for its agricultural economy which revolves around a ranching culture. Montana’s capital city is Helena, a former gold rush town, while its largest city, Billings, is the seat of the famed Yellowstone Country. The history of Montana, much like the other Northwestern territories, is one of long Native American settlement and conflict over land ownership and control with European settlers.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts is located in New England, in the northeastern region of the United States. Bordered by Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York, the state’s capital, Boston, is the only state capital of the contiguous United States to sit on an oceanic shoreline (Atlantic). As a major centre of colonisation in the 17th century onward, the state has a rich history as a port for English settlers travelling on the Mayflower ship. John Adams, one of the United States’ Founding Fathers is from Massachusetts state, and the region has a rich intellectual history, with Harvard and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Universities among the highest performing in the world.

Missouri (MO) ranks as the 21st largest state in the United States and holds the 18th position in terms of population. It was nominated as a state in 1821. It borders with 8 other states including Oklahoma, Nebraska, Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, and Kentucky. The state comprises 114 counties and its capital is Jefferson City.

Missouri was the most significant trade and transportation hub in America. It’s home to Anheuser-Busch, the largest beer producing centre for Budweiser beer.

Missouri is also where Mark Twain was born. It’s named after the Missouri River which in turn got its name from the native Missouri Indians. The Missouri River is also the longest river in America.

A fun fact about Missouri is that it was where ice cream waffle cones were invented.
