South Dakota, SD

South Dakota, which became a state in 1889, is named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux tribes who historically lived in the area, and many of whom still live there today. Its population is small and its economy is mainly based on farming and ranching. South Dakota is the home of one of America’s most famous monuments, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial – which the Lakota Sioux knew as The Six Grandfathers before it was carved. More than two million people come to visit it each year, as well as South Dakota’s other tourist attractions, such as the historic town of Deadwood and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

South Carolina

The beautiful, lush state of South Carolina is the Easternmost part of the Deep South, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its miles of sandy beaches, the state is also steeped in history, and is named for King Charles I of England, who first established the Province of Carolina back in 1629. Whilst very much a part of the South, it’s a vibrant and multicultural place.

Today, the state has one of the fastest growing economies in the USA, and its mix of urban dynamism and bucolic idylls mean there’s something to interest everyone. From state capital Columbia to historic Charleston to the beauty of its 47 unique state parks, South Carolina is always varied and always interesting.
