It was named after Queen Elisabeth the 1st of England who instructed Walter Raleigh to form a colony to the North of Florida. An interesting fact is that all new land found by the British was named Virginia. Its also named the Mother of Presidents because it was where 8 of America’s presidents were born.
The local community claims that the first ever Thanksgiving feast was organized in Virginia. For about a century, one of the most famous yearly events is the gathering of about 100 wild horses which swim from Assateague Island across to Chincoteague Island in East Virginia.
